Max drive size?

  • k... I know this may wind up being kind of a stupid question, but Ive been looking all over for specs on udma66, and the maximum size of drives used on this type of interface and either this is hard to come by, or Im just looking everywhere but where I need to... :thinking_face:

    That being said,

    Anyone know how big of a drive, and how much I can have in any useable partition ? Also how many partitions will a drive need to be when formatted for linux on this machine?

    Thanks,
    Darby

    by now there is no limit :).

    Or to be correct... there is a Limit
    (2^48)*512 byte = 144115188075855872 Byte.

    Explanation:

    You have an 48 bit adress room and 512 byte per sector.

    Converting the above value into an "readable" size the theoretical limit is at 128 Petabyte (which is 131072 Terrabyte).

    To make it short: Every HDD should work, no matter how "big" it is :).

  • So... even a 1/2 terrabyte hitachi HDS725050KLAT80 would work then? :winking_face:
    Also, would it matter if the drive is ATA/UDMA133 and the dreambox interface is UDMA66?

    Thanks,

    @Darby:

    I have tested following Disk Drives (also into some commercial Sat-Receiver) everyone work well in the DM7025 refrained from some commercial Sat-Receiver:

    with a IDE-Converter
    ST9100822A = 2,5" 100GB Seagate Momentus 4200.2,
    Ultra ATA/100, 4200 rpm, 12.5 ms avg

    ST3250823A = 3,5" 250GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.8,
    Ultra ATA/100, 7200 rpm, 11 ms avg, Master no Slave present

    ST3400832A = 3,5" 400GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.8,
    Ultra ATA/100, 7200 rpm, 11 ms avg, Master no Slave present

    and with a SATA-Converter
    ST3400832NS, 3,5" 400GB Seagate Barracuda NL35 Series
    SATA 1.5Gb/s, 7200 rpm, 8 ms avg

    I also get one next week:
    ST3500641A = 3,5" 500GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.9,
    Ultra ATA/100, 7200 rpm, 11 ms avg, Master no Slave present

    .. and i think this one also will work well

    However, you should pay attention to two things. The maximum current consumption is not too high and the turn speed rather amounts to 5400 rpm instead of 7200 rpm.

    I know - of the notebook computer plate foreseen, every hard disk above works with 7200 rpm. However, this does not certainly have to mean it's necessary to have a drive with 7200 rpm.

    Hard disks with a high rotational speed get usually warmer than such with for example 5400 rpm, the noise as well is insignificantly louder - and not least - the current consumption usually looks better at lower speed.

    Hello Darby,

    Question 1:
    HDS725050KLAT80 = 3,5" 500GB Hitachi Deskstar 7K500
    Ultra ATA 133, 7200 rpm, 8,5 ms avg, Master no Slave present

    We have such drives in our EMC2 System - specially for you, i take one spare plate out of the grid. AND.. yes the drive works, the Operating temperature is 32°C (DM7025 is in Standby) to 55°C (DM7025 is in record mode since 5 hours), both is OK

    Question 2:
    ..all UDMA (UDMA133, UDMA100, UDMA66) Interfaces are down/upgrade compatible, what means every drive that follows the ATA/UDMA Standard works with every ATA/UDMA Interface!
