Streaming 1080p from NAS problem

  • Hi

I have trouble streaming 1080p content from a NAS server i am useing the Media Player. Video lacks some places where there is alot of activity, but the NAS server should be fast enough, tested it with Intel NAS Performance Toolkit and it tests 35,4 MB/s in HD video playback, but the Dm800 only have 100 MBit/s Ethernet but it should still be able to get 12.5 Mb/s that should be plenty of bandwidth for 1080p. A standard movie in 4.1 is in the area 7.6 Mbit/s to 10.1 Mbit/s and a 5.1 movie around 12 Mbit/sbut this is only around 1 MB/s. I don't understand why it lacks if i copy it to the HDD in the Dm800 there is no problem.

I have also tried to connect the NAS directly to DM800 without router but is the same problem.

I am thinking it could be the software that has some limitations? any ideas?

    Thanks

theoreticly yes. but if you do a FTP Transfer or whatever you will notice that you only get around 5 MB/s when the box is active on a HD channel for example. It needs CPU power for network. If the box is idle and not running on a hd channel you can get up to 9MB/s but if it's active you will not get so much bandwidth anymore because the CPU is busy with other stuff.

Theorie ist, wenn man alles weiß, aber nichts funktioniert.
Praxis ist, wenn alles funktioniert aber niemand weiß warum.

  • So you think because of the CPU usage that 1080p content it can't transfer more than 1 MB/s, I think this is a different case because in a FTP transfer, it is a secondary task, so the dreambox will clock that down if there aren't enough resources, but here it is the primary task so it will get as many resources as it has.

  • well if it's not a bandwidth problem, it must have to do with the content itself. The bitrate is too high, wrong container format, too many reFrames or whatever.

already tried to play those files directly on the box, without LAN and NAS Stuff between it !? Like said, specially when running HD Content, the CPU and box is under heavy load already, might be too much for it when streaming 1080p content via lan. But not sure ... I always play my 1080 mkv's from the internal HDD.

You could post some info from your video files that you are trying to stream. MediaInfo is a good tool for it. Open the file with it, switch to TEXT view and post that info here so we can see if the dreambox supports that format.

  • Here is the information from 2 movies i have played from the internal HDD without problems:

  • Okay it seems that it is hardware related because a 1080p movie can get bitrates up to 100 mbit/s, is it possible to somehow connect a gigabit netcard?

  • Okay dosen't seem to be the reason for this problem at least, monitored the bit rate transfer when watching a movie, and it had problems when the bit rate was 17,7 Mbps, there is no problems when it is lower than this. So i think the problem is in the software somewhere, tried to transfer a file to the hdd in the dreambox and here i get 35 Mbps, but now i am buying an PS3, it shall be exciting to see if DMM have solved this problem, or at least given a respond in this thread of some sort, before the next millenium.

as far as I know the dreambox supports only up to level 4.1 and not 5.1

So remuxxing it with TSMuxxer or whatever down to level 4.1 should maybe do it ...
