Well, I formatted the USB drive in ext3 and copied a Mythbusters episode to it: it took about eight hours! This is the longest yet!

I have no idea why the Dreambox should be so slow when copying to a USB drive. I am quite convinced that copying the same episode from my Windows laptop to the USB drive will only take a matter of minutes (but I haven't tried).

It seems that I have lost this one, and I will need to get out the cables whenever I want to copy something.

Thanks, guys (and gals if there are any) for your comments and help.

have you any win pc? (don't know do iPad can browse win shares)
then try another way, install on dreambox sambaserver and open drembox's files from pc \\dreambox_local_ip\

Would that make it possible to copy the movies faster?

Yes, I have a Win7 laptop which I use for those tasks that an iPad cannot do!

Thank you guys, that was a terrific response that I got!

The tip that I could use directly was of course the one about telnet and mc. Windows built-in telnet support was not good enough, but I found a superb telnet client for my iPad, and that suits me even better than using the laptop.

Maxi warned me that copying to a FAT32 USB drive be too slow, and alas, he was right. I hate when people are right about bad things!

Copying an episode of Mythbusters that takes about seven minutes with cables took three hours and twenty minutes! This is clearly unacceptable.

My next step will be to format a USB-drive in a unix format (ext4 ?), and see if the Dreambox will read it and work faster.

I am back with more questions ...

The story so far is that it works OK to copy movies to my laptop using FTP. However, if I use my WLAN for any part of this transfer, the transfer grows alarmingly, so I lay out cables every Thursday in order to copy the stuff that I want to see during the weekend.

This is quite a chore, and I thought, maybe it is not so bad if I could copy the movies to a USB stick after all. You guys warned me that it would take a lot of time to convert to FAT32, but I would like to see for myself!

But how do I do it? When I put a USB stick into the Dreambox, I can browse the files using the File Browser from the menu. I can also browse the movies, but I cannot seem to be able to copy them, because the USB drive does not turn up under the possible target destinations.

The web interface does not have a file browser, as far as I can see.

How would you copy the movies to a USB stick, preferably using a Windows machine for giving the command?

    Thanks a lot!

I thought it would be easier connecting through the USB connector, but you have convinced me that FTP is the way to go. I hope my laptop will have the necessary power. My cable provider has just announced that they will stop sending non-HDTV channels where possible.

I really do not care if a recording is HDTV or not, so perhaps I could convert them to a lower resolution and be able to play them even if the laptop is not powerful enough. But even if it is possible, it will probably add hours to the time I need to prepare a recording ...

I have an DM8000, and for a long time I have copied recordings to DVDs in order to take them with me and see them at my summer house. However, HD recordings cannot be written to DVDs, and they are too big anyway. So I want to copy them to an external hard disk instead, and hopefully I can view them by playing them from my on my laptop.

Is this possible, and how would I do that? I could also try to copy them to and USB card.

I do not know how to copy the files (although that seems to be the least of the problems), and I am not sure if the Dreambox can copy files to a FAT32 or NTFS system. And finally, I have no idea what format the files are in, and if I can find a player for Windows that can play them (although again, this is probably a solvable problem).

    Do you have some advice?

    Thanks,
    Steen

    Success!

I tried DreamUp, but it could not contact the DreamBox. Then I used the browser interface, and with Firefox nothing happened, but with IE the flash process started, and soon afterwards, I had my DreamBox up and working! Thanks, guys!

It loaded a backup automatically, so I had everything back, including my AutoTimer settings. Some months old, so they still need a lot of editing, but still!

I got a bit worried when it told me that the disk needed to be mounted or "initialised", but some time later, the exclamation mark was gone, and everything seems in order.

Now my main problem is that the "Subtitles" item has disappeared from the main menu. According to the manual, it should be there by default. Could it be because I now have version 2.0 of Enigma2?

As the board is bilingual, I don't think anyone will take offense at you writing in English

Good. I am myself moderator on a board where this would be an offense, and I am a bit embarrassed at stepping in to it myself!

Without a log it is hard to even speculate about the reason for the problems you are experiencing.

Definitely. I will see if I can create one without too much trouble.

If time is of the essence you could just flash a clean image from http://www.dreamboxupdate.com using DreamUp or your browser.
I would also recommend to activate the "recover bad sectors"-option when flashing and using an experimental OE 2.0 image, as it will provide a lot of enhanced functionality and is quite stable now (when using a swapfile).
Active development has been limited to the OE 2.0 branch for quite a while now.

Thanks. This was just what I was hoping for.

For future reference: You can use gutemine's dFlash plugin to make full image backups of the current state of your box. If something goes amiss and you need to quickly restore a working state, you can just flash the backup image.

I will look into it. I have taken a backup at times, but now it is locked inside a non-responding computer, so it is not worth much.

One problem I have had with the DreamBox is that it does not connect to my WLAN automatically. If I want to use the WLAN, I need to enter the setup and ask it to connect, which then happens without problems. But this means that if I want to access it when I am away, I will have to leave it on all the time.

And don't worry - even if you have to flash a clean image to bring the box back up to speed, you won't lose anything that has been saved to the harddisk.

I am relieved! And I also need to resolve this speedily, so it is quite OK for me to flash a clean image.

I wonder what went wrong. Crashes have occurred before, and I have long suspected a memory leak in some program that causes a crash after some time. I just love the AutoTimer, and I certainly hope it can be brought to function again. At the time I was fiddling with the selection of channels to record, because the AutoTimer usually ignore whatever I choose, and record just about anything on any channel that contains the target phrase. I had the inspiration that it might help deleting the channel selection and making a new one, and that was the point it crashed.

But it might have been a random fluke.

This is a screenshot: [Blockierte Grafik: https://encrypted-tbn1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSwmHnrZxqaGrDUl7wWKYFH2cI2NSHUXm8CFQvzs0XTE8exzJ10]

When the machine is showing this screen it is not responding to anything, except the power switch!
I do not know how to create a bootlog when the machine is not responding.

I might add that although I a professional IT specialist, I am strictly Windows, and I will need some coaching if I am to operate on a Linux system! But I might find someone at my work to help me ...

By the way, am I breaching some rule when I write in English here? I just found that there is a special English subforum. Perhaps it would have been more appropriate if I had posted there.

My DM 8000 suddenly crashed while I was entering programs in the autotimer plugin. The boot process seemed to conclude (the progress bar went all the way) but instead of showing the current programme, all I got was the grey "Wait" screen again. After waiting for a couple of hours, I rebooted, and this time, it told me that crash logs were available, and would I send them to Dream? I said, "yes", and then the machine again stopped with the grey "Wait" screen. The next couple of boots did not mention any crash logs, but it still stops at the same place.

I have the original Dream software, and I have tried to update it as often as possible (but it is ages since a new version appeared).

What can I do now to get it out of this condition? Preferably saving the half a terabyte of programmes that I have recorded.

I understand German perfectly, but my own German is terrible, so you can reply in German if you want.

    Thanks in advance!

I have a DM8000 and it works fine on my own LAN. It is also possible to fetch updates and plugins, but everything else, such as browsing, or seeing YouTube films does not work. After a while a timeout message appears to the effect that the requested address cannot be found.

I suspect that it is because of a DNS failure, but that would mean that updates and plugins are fetched using IP-addresses and not names.

The DNS setting have been set up carefully, and I have tried using my own router, and using external DNS servers, but there has been no success. Do anybody have a suggestion?
