I have to add to this discussion that both boxes never had any firmware flashed, official or not... That was indeed my intention... Never had the chance since they were DOA.

Not a single word from DMM!
The reseller replaced it by a second unit, DOA too, replaced the second and the third is running until today...

How can this be possible?
The official reseller replaced (or so they say) the brand new 500HD I've bought past friday. This time I managed to update the firmware and apart from some really weird networking issues it seemed to work OK. It's been like this for the past two days.
Now, I arrive home just to find the receiver frozen... Ok, I'll just turn the back switch OFF and back ON... to... same problem again, the box doesn't boot and no sign of the green LED.. another 500HD has died on me again!!
I remember using the Authenticity test when it was working, just to be sure, and it came out clean... both mac and serial numbers matched.
What can I do DMM? Just forget the 500HD and search for alternatives?
This is not acceptable.!

Hi,
Just yesterday I bought a new 500HD from an official reseller. My first thing was to update its firmware and so I went collecting the tools. The flash image, dreamup and the USB-Serial drivers.
I started reading and found the Web Browser flash most easy to execute and turned off the box (by this time the front green led was ON).
I tried the procedure of turning the box back on while holding the front standby button and waited for my DHCP server to give IP configuration to the box, no luck here so I just repeated the procedure.
I've seen several DHCP REQUEST msgs with a strange mac address that started with 1, which I ignored but the box never got a valid IP configuration.
By this time I just went with the serial/dreamup procedure. Using Vista I installed the drivers and rebooted as requested. Back from the reboot I launched dreamup and pressed Connect and turned on the box as the message stated... thats when things started to smell fishy... none of the buttons changed to the enabled status. I tried it several times and things didn't seem to change. By this time I had a look at the box itself and something seemed different... The front green led was completely off (never saw it ON again) and I can see from the case cuts for the fan that some red leds are on inside.
Red usually doesn't mean good things and I started looking for the worst case scenario troubleshooting... eventually I got hyperterminal and turned the box on while connected to the USB/Serial COM port. The following should be the bootlog from my brand new DM500HD:

FThe box seems dead to me... Honestly I never expected this from a Dream product, my older 7020 and 500S never failed on me and we still have a nice WORKING relation :D, never expected this from a new product like the 500HD...
Any advice from the Dream community before going back to the reseller next week?
Thanks in advance.
