I have most interest in lamedb, userbouquet, and maybe settings file. Is it just a matter of restoring these files to /etc/enigma2 and rebooting the Dreambox?

I have made a copy of all the files in enigma2. Are there any other locations I should be aware of?

Are the formats/syntax used in these files the same for OE 2.0 (Engima2 4.x) as with OE 1.6 (Enigma2 2.x)? I agree thought that it's best to restore as little as possible for a fresh start.

I am looking for a way to make a backup of the channel list and bouquets before I flash my Dreambox. I found some program called Dreambox Edit. I think I have used this at some point in the past. I am not sure if this is still being developed or if it works in Windows 10. It also seems a bit complicated and laborious just to make a backup copy of the channel list. So is there a more simple alternative? Where are the channel lists in a Dreambox? How are they stored? Are they just text files that I can copy and restore?

WiFi is only working when the box is running, the Secondstage is no running OS -> no OS -> no drivers -> no WiFi

Why would I need drivers though? I am not using a USB WiFi adapter/dongle if that's what you mean. I have a network cable between the Dreambox and a wireless AP device which connects to the router and hands over an IP to the Dreambox. The Dreambox thinks it's connected to the router directly.

Never mind old Firefox, I got this working in latest Firefox DE. I got to the flash page. The tip is to use Private Browsing to get rid of old cached content.

    Problem solved!

Still not sure why a wireless AP link would fail... any idea? Why does it have to be a wired connection?

I said all old boxes have a BIOS including DM500HD and v2 is nothing special just other flash memory.

Yes, I saw your post too late. Sorry about that.

About portable app... would that be a Portable App app? I can't find any official release of portable Firefox 3.5. Just checking.

    https://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable

Because this download is a special PAF format that I assume requires the Portable App platform.

On the other hand... I was able to get into BIOS by telneting into it just as described in the articles above. Since my Dreambox does not have built in WiFi support, I have it connected to a wireless AP. So what I did is I took a network cable and connected the Dreambox directly to the router. That way I was able to get into BIOS. Why does wireless link fail?... I still get the same IP and everything.

Anyway... I am still unable to get to the flashing page. I will try a different browser and maybe an older version of Firefox if I can get it to work.

How do you even enter the BIOS? If it is a v2 I should be able to enter its BIOS setup program, otherwise I will know it's a v1. No instructions are given on that page.

How do I get into the bios?
"It's the same procedure which is used for flashing the box, take a look at DMM."

So since I am at the said flashing stage already, I should be able to telnet into my Dreambox. Except I can't. Either because it's not reachable or because I have a v1 which does not support entering BIOS utility via Telnet.

Is that right version 1 of DM500HD has no way of entering its BIOS?

Not sure if this would be productive anyway. I guess this leaves me with only one option: DreamUp.

There is no point in deleting boot files. My problem is not that I can't get into flashing mode, my problem is that I can't reach the Dreambox over the network despite having an IP address.

Is there a way to flash over the web interface? Or maybe connect to the Dreambox with a network cable directly, P2P?

    From the link above:

"In some cases the IP number can cause problems. Therefore it's possible to enter a static IP number in the Bios of the boxor to use the tool DreamEnum."

I don't know what DreamEnum is, but this seems to suggest that it is in fact a good thing that my Dreambox has a static IP. However this is set on the DHCP server, not on the Dreambox.

    Dreambox Bios
"In newer Dreamboxes it's possible to enter the Bios to change or verify settings."

I see that "DM 500 HD (v2)" is listed. Is it possible to enter the BIOS on my Dreambox? How do I know if I have "v2"?

    I don't think I have a v2, I think mine is v1, but I am not sure.

How do you even enter the BIOS? If it is a v2 I should be able to enter its BIOS setup program, otherwise I will know it's a v1. No instructions are given on that page.

    Hello again!

I tried to step into Second Stage Loader as described on the following two pages.

Flashing a new firmware by Browser

    Flash over the network

I get a network link and I get a static IP from my gateway. I also get a nice confirmation on the TV.

    "Link: OK
    Mode: 100 Full"

But when I go to the IP address in my web browser, it just keeps loading. I then get a reassuring "connection has timed out" message.

What's might be the problem? Static IP? I don't think this could cause this kind of problem, it should not matter if it's dynamic or static. Corrupted Second Stage Loader? Too old Loader? It's build "#84 (2011-09-01)".

I even tried to append "upgrade.dhtml" to the URL to no avail.

How does Open Embedded (OE) fit into all of this? Is this something like the build system for Enigma2? (Answered in another thread.)

I am told in another thread that my Dreambox currently has OE 1.6 and that I should get the latest OE 2.0 based binary from the link below.

    http://dreamboxupdate.com/opendreambox/2.0.0/images/dm500hd/

What kind of Enigma2 will I be getting then? For example if I take "dreambox-image-dm500hd-20170216.nfi"?

    http://dreamboxupdate.com/open…mage-dm500hd-20170216.nfo

    Date: 2017-02-16 00:36
    Enigma2: 3.999git20160616-r10.0
    Distro: opendreambox 2.0.0
    Machine: Dreambox dm500hd
    Link: http://dreamboxupdate.com/opendreambox/2.0.3/ipk
    MD5: 3f5c2aa9096d4ddda8bc3c1dac656ac0
    SHA256: 75ad3b858044fc96772de05ebc3862801e361a30f6721b5ec6438d9dbe46926d

Who is the issuer here? And why does it say "Distro: opendreambox 2.0.0"? Distro? Is the name of the distribution not Enigma2 anymore? Isn't that the name of the OS?

I almost understand all this... :face_with_open_mouth:

enigma basically is the app running on linux.
the image contains enigma, linux, device drivers

So basically Enigma2 is to a Dreambox what Ubuntu is to a PC?

The "3.2.3" is the version number of the image binary? This refers to the the NFI file "release-dm500hd-3.2.3.nfi"?

    http://dreamboxupdate.com/open…release-dm500hd-3.2.3.nfo

    "Enigma2: Release 3.2.3
    Machine: Dreambox dm500hd
    Date: 20120707
    Issuer: Dream Multimedia"

OK, so the 3.2.3 binary was released 2012-07-07? So then what is "Enigma2: 2012-11-03-3.2" referring to? This Enigma2 was built in december 2012, then they went back in time, and released the binary in July... ? :winking_face_with_tongue:

Is there a version history of Enigma2 somewhere?

What is OE? How do I verify that I have version 1.6?

If I update from the "feed", then the "Image" field on the About view does not update? So internally it is 3.2.4 but the About view says 3.2.3?

So the company name has been changed from Dream Multimedia GmbH to Dream Property GmbH. I have not noticed this before, but I can see on dreambox.de that the copyright notice has changed.

This is the latest official image for your box.

    dreambox-image-dm500hd-20170216.nfi

    Is this it?

It says "experimental". So it's not stable?

I still don't understand what is what. For starters this is version 2.0.0. Mine is 3.2.3 and is older?... in what universe? I need to understand what I will be installing if I decide to do this.

And who owns "dreamboxupdate.com"? Dream Multimedia? The Whois data is obfuscated, so it's hard to tell.

    http://dreamboxupdate.com/

But u should think about upgrading your box (e.g. buying a dm900 or dm 920)

I was just looking at DM920 UHD and it is very expensive here. It's not very sought after product and only 2 e-tailers have it in stock. No one else really sells these here. The alternative is to order it from Germany or some other country and save at least 30% off the listed price here, shipping included.

But the price is not the main reason I don't wand something like DM920 UHD. It's the top of the line equipment! I give you that! But I don't really need something maxed out like that. I would be happy with something more simple like DM500 HD. I see there is a "V2" version of this model now, maybe something like that would do.

Anyway! Thanks for the encouragement! There are a number of things I should do that I never get around to, like painting and redecorating the second bedroom. I am not lazy. I am just an incredible procrastinator. Postponing the Dreambox update for several years speaks for itself.

Nevertheless, why are you trying to flash such an old image? Use the latest OE2.0 Image... https://dreamboxupdate.com/ope…box/2.0.0/images/dm500hd/

Because that's what I'm familiar with and I know it works. Afraid of change. Plus I didn't know about "OE2.0".

You mean this works on my old Dreambox too?

What is this "OE2.0"? What does it stand for?... open enigma? Open dreambox? Is this official software by Dream Multimedia?

    Hello!

I will play dumb and ask a number of dumb questions, so please be patient with me and try to explain these numbers and the thinking behind all this because I do not understand, it makes my head spin round and round.

So I have this DM500 HD with the following software.

    Enigma2: 2012-11-03-3.2
    Image: Release 3.2.3 2012-07-07

When I look at the downloads for this box I get the following details.

    Firmware
    (Release 3.2.4 from 04.11.2012)

How is Enigma2 different from Image? Are they not one and the same? Can I get an Image without Enigma2? Or just Enigma2 and no Image?

What is the said download for? The Image or Enigma2? Or is it just the Firmware?

Why does it say "3.2" in the first string "Enigma2: 2012-11-03-3.2"? :face_with_open_mouth:

Why is the date in second string "2012-07-07" not the same as "2012-11-03" in the first string?

Is it true then that 3.2.3 was released on 2012-11-03, only one day before 3.2.4 which was released on 2012-11-04? :face_with_rolling_eyes:

I am not sure what I did, but it suddenly decided to start working again. All I did was just navigate through different menus on the Dreambox and I was also checking out different features and options in TS Panel but I did not take any action to run a utility or a command or perform a task. I was just checking my options to see if I missed something.

So anyway, it has decided automagically to start working again, so I am good for now.

Oh and, 1. SSH now works, and 2. Telnet also works.

I must have unintentionally touched its g spot...

    Hello!

I was using the web interface to remotely control my DM500 HD and I unintentionally selected to update the system software. I could not abort it once it had began. So after completion, it said that 58 packages have been updated and I rebooted. That's all fine, except now when I access the web interface I can see that all the different boxes are showing animations and loading. So all I get is the outlines of the interface, there is no content coming up anywhere. This is likely to do with XML and Python... because I saw that one of the packages that were downloaded and installed were named Python XML or similar, and I sometimes see a validation error on the web interface saying something about "XML parser" bla, bla.

I had been postponing this system update for years... as if I knew it could screw things up for me. Apparently I was right all this time.

How do I get my Dreambox back to normal operation?

    1. Telnet access is not working.
    "Resource temporarily unavailable"

    2. SSH access is not working.
    "Resource temporarily unavailable"

    3. HTTP access is bugging.
    "Loading"...
